1st Easingwold (Forest of Galtres) Cub Scout camp at Redmire
After the last camp in at the Dawnay almost ‘floated away’ it was decided that we should venture further afield in search of sunshine. And so it was, last Friday afternoon 14 cubs and a number of adult helpers arrived at Redmire in the Dales as the rain started to fall... However, it was not to last for long. After pitching tents, making basin holders for the washing up bowls and playing a wide game the day ended with a camp fire and sing song.“The camp fire was great because we had marshmallows, hot chocolate and biscuits.”The camp then settled down to some rest.“The funniest bit was on the first night when Joe’s cuckoo kept singing!”On Saturday the group hiked to Bolton Castle.“The best bit was looking around the castle because it was interesting to see what a medieval castle looked like.”Armada week-end was in full swing and the cubs had the chance to speak to the ‘occupants’ who talked about how they cooked food and warded off the Black Death. They also had the chance to see the armour and weapons used at the time.“Wearing the chain mail armour was really heavy; it was dragging me to the floor. It must have been very difficult being a soldier.”The pack was given instruction on ‘Pike drill’ much to the enjoyment of other members of the public visiting the castle. After enjoying the challenge of the maze and a large ice cream the walk back to camp was followed by yet another excellent meal, this time of bangers, beans and mash prepared by Baloo and was followed by a mass game of rounders.“The funniest bit was when we were all in the toilets and couldn’t get out. Charlie suggested smashing the door down but then Mike just opened it from the outside!”The following day the cubs enjoyed a walk to the river and indulged in stone skimming, some with more success than others; we then had the task of breaking camp and headed home. Arkela was very impressed with the group.“They have all done brilliantly, the tents were well organised, they went to sleep at a decent time and woke up at a decent time (!) and have really got involved in everything we have done.”But as with any camp there are always ‘moments’...“A funny bit was when Arkela knocked the large rock off the stone wall with her rucksack.”All in all it was a really successful camp and we are all looking forward to the next one. The last word goes to the cubs.“Thanks very much to Arkela, Kaa, Baloo and the other helpers for a really fun camp! With contributions from Fergus, Billy, Chris, Thomas, Maximilian and Rory Full Article Archived News View All...
