A Look Back At Galtres Festival 2010

After entering the gates and being welcomed into the cultural melting pot that is Galtres Festival (held in the wonderfully picturesque village of Crayke, Easingwold), we're met with an Alice In Wonderland landscapes featuring colourful painted mushrooms and excellently dressed hatters who are running amuck and entertaining excited children from the start with numerous activities while the “grown-ups” are beginning to settle down and relax with a glass (or two) of the world's finest cider(s). Indeed, the festival's organisers have gone all-out to support York's economy (and that of the surrounding areas) this year as well by providing stalls and stands to caterers and craftspeople from throughout North Yorkshire. It's clear that before the music even starts that there's a unique buzz in the air, and while Yorkshire is  home to a number of festivals this bank holiday weekend, Galtres has the strongest community links and it is because of this, and its strong ethics in support of “doing the green thing” and various local charities that it has become so popular in recent years and seems to have developed into the area's most popular yearly music and culture event. On the first day (Saturday) we are offered the delightful indie-pop of People: In Airports who rock-out like a ten-round scuffle between Shed Seven and The Pixies. By contrast we are given the seasoned acoustic musings of David Ward MacLean, followed by the sharp and resounding prog-rock of York alternative scene-stars Honeytone Cody over on the Duke's Stage and of course, the multi-faceted and talented Arts Barge Project (who incidentally work to entertain punters across all stages this weekend with a range of instruments and eager guests). It really is all top stuff from a truly diverse troupe of predominantly local musical talent. Next up, we check out the delightful sounds of iconic 90s pop-rockers The Lightning Seeds (led by Scouse musical mastermind Ian Broudie) who finish the schizophrenic day (it rains then shines so often, we become so very confused) off in fine form with an eclectic mix of sounds and uplifting rock sounds.
