Anti-Social Hot-Spot Demolished

Easingwold Safer Neighbourhood Team joined forces with Hambleton District Council yesterday to remove a shed which was blighting the lives of the local community. The disused building situated at the rear of Kellbalk Lane in Easingwold was a gathering place for youths who indulged in under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour, causing problems for local residents. Inspector Paul Stephenson of Hambleton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The shed was a particular problem in that it was a magnet for local youths who gathered there at all times of the day and night. “We have received numerous complaints from residents about rowdy, illegal and dangerous activities, the fire service have been called on several occasions to extinguish fires.  “Although the shed was on private land, after extensive enquiries by the local Safer Neighbourhood Team, we tracked down the owner who agreed to the removal of the structure.“The shed took around two hours to demolish using a combination of sledgehammers, levers, a four-wheel drive vehicle and muscle power! It took around two hours to dismantle and during this time a number of people approached us, relieved that something had been done about the problem.  “This is a great example of police and partners working together to improve our communities and the quality of life for local residents.”Geoff Lodge, Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator for Hambleton Community Safety Partnership, added: “North Yorkshire Police and Hambleton District Council, as key members of the Hambleton Community Safety Partnership are keen to get involved in initiatives which will have a positive impact on communities.“The demolition of this shed shows how partners can work together to resolve problems affecting local people.”
