A busy time of year for those competing in the York District Road Race League with races occurring every fortnight.  Under normal circumstances the thought of a warm early summer evening would please most people (especially this year) but on the evening of 29th May mutterings were heard about it being too warm by those preparing to compete in the third round being hosted by ERC. (It must also be said at this point that runners are not usually against competing in glorious weather, it’s just that this year there have been very few occasions to actually acclimatise to running in hot, sunny conditions.)  A great turn out was evident drawing a field of 255 competitors of which 44 were representing ERC.  The warm evening meant that quick times were hard to come by and the majority of runners were somewhat slower at this event than the previous two races of the competition.  However, Ross Quin came close to achieving a PB on his birthday but it was decided that he was probably just in a hurry to go out for his celebratory meal!  ERC continues to remain in 3rd place in the Men’s Open Team and have moved up to 2nd in the Women’s Open Team category. All rounds of RRL are in the Club’s Championship. With 5 rounds to go Club Chairman Ken Dart is still hanging on to top spot but the big guns are moving in. Paul Bergman has moved into 2nd place with Nigel Ramsden 3rd. Class positions are also far from decided with many changes expected before the final round at Tholthorpe in September.Other recent races that club members have taken part in include the Melmerby 10k which Debbie Hansell, Bernie Wood and Jane Maloney tackled with great strength of mind despite it being the hottest day of the year so far with a midday temperature nearing 30°c.  Club members are not just involved in running 10k races. Several have been tackling marathons lately – in April Alice Appleyard and Ross Quin successfully completed the London Marathon in just over 4 hours; in May Neil King finished the Edinburgh Marathon in 3:30 minutes along with Caroline Hutchinson in 4:06 and Kate Fundell in 4:22.  Also in May Mark Jackson completed the Marathon of the North  in an excellent time of 3.08.Club training nights include away evenings and last week saw a popular return to tracks around Kilburn and the foot of the White Horse.  This away night is usually warm and sunny with some stunning views across the countryside but alas this year it was torrential rain.  Fortunately the warmth of the local hostelry was a welcome end to a very damp training night. The day of honour for Roger Nichols, Club Secretary, to complete his stint for carrying the Olympic Torch is looming very quickly.  Roger is due to undertake his torch carrying role on Monday 18th June at Scarborough - no doubt a report on the occasion will appear in a future article.  We wish Roger luck on this momentous event and hope that all goes well.  Thirty five people joined the Beginners Group which is now well underway having completed four of their fifteen weeks of training.   Some have even signed up to do their first 10k already as their target and as an extra incentive to keep up their training scheduleThis week’s training night is social runs around Easingwold.
