Easingwold CC V A Yorkshire XI

Big hitting from all rounder Matthew Turnbull, who smashed an impressive 75 not out,  just failed to give an Easingwold Invitation  XI victory against a powerful Yorkshire XI in front of a big crowd at Easingwold CC.Turnbull revelled in Yorkshire’s decision to bring spin into their attack as a highly entertaining 20/20 match neared its conclusion and, with sixes being sprayed around the ground, car owners anxiously guarded their vehicles. However, Turnbull’s heroics could not save Easingwold from defeat as they fell 33 runs short on 175-7 chasing the imposing Yorkshire target of 208-7, which featured an excellent 50 from opener Simon Guy, the ex-county player.Turnbull had earlier found himself on the receiving end when he opened the bowling for the home side, who were bolstered by the inclusion of Stephen Piercy (Woodlands CC), Dave Johnson (Dunnington CC) and Matthew Till (Sessay CC) with Guy and  Jack Leaning combining to take 18 off the first over. The run gathering continued at a hectic pace and the opening stand raced to 53 by the fifth over when Paul Skilbeck took a difficult catch to dismiss Leaning. However, Yorkshire continued to plunder the bowling and despite a catch and wicket from Paul Redshaw for the home side, Yorkshire set a formidable target with captain Gerard Brophy adding 33 before he was bowled by Andrew Metcalfe.Easingwold knew they were facing a target of more than 10 an over and did well to bring up 50 in just five overs. The 400 strong home crowd were hoping for another of Skilbeck’s destructive peformances, but he went for 16 and suddenly the home side were 63-3. Yorkshire applied the pressure, leaving the opposition needing 100 off the last five overs. It looked a hopeless cause until Turnbull took a liking to the slow stuff to set up a crowd pleasing finale to round off a great match for the organisers.Result; Yorkshire XI; 208-7 ( S Guy 50, G Brophy 33, J Leaninng 22; Marwood 2-15, Metcalfe 2-29)Easingwold Invitation XI; 175-5(M Turnbull 75 no, D Johnson 18, P Skilbeck 16, D Copeland 16)
