EASINGWOLD HAXBY-ROBINSON BOWLING CLUB

Our four wood ‘pairs’ club competition took place on Sunday 27th May in ideal summer weather, though if anything, it was rather on the hot side with the temperature reaching 26° C; but then ‘weatherwise’, bowlers are not that easy to please.  ‘The Pearson Bowl’, as it has become known, is a lovely little silver rose bowl which was presented to the club as a memorial to her husband, by the widow of local butcher, William Pearson Brown, himself a long standing member and considerable benefactor of the club, who passed away in 1965.  Within the club, the significance of this trophy is not overlooked and to win it is a much coveted aim of participants. The pairs were divided into two groups, each pair playing three preliminary games of 40 minutes duration; two points being awarded for a win, one for a draw; the pair from each group with the most points, going on to compete in the final.  After the score cards were scrutinised and confirmed by the adjudicator, it was found that the final pairs were: Roger Green & Audrey Hunton v Sally Roocroft & Don Lockie. The final game proved to be a very close encounter, with Sally & Don taking an early lead. With the clock ticking and time running out, they still led by one shot, then on a very long end, Audrey played her wood onto the jack, taking it into the ditch for an unbeatable lie.   Roger was able to draw two further shots and thus win the event by 8 shots to 6.  Congratulations are due to the winners but should also be extended to all who took part, since without competitors there would be no event.Incidentally, we were entertained throughout the afternoon by the pleasing sound of the Easingwold Town Band as they played through their considerable repertoire at Memorial Gardens. Much appreciation!
