EASINGWOLD LAWN TENNIS CLUB – LADIES’ LEAGUE (Hovingham & District)
The last match in the Ladies’ Hovingham League took place on Thursday, 21 August. This was a re-arranged match with Ryedale, as poor weather had forced the cancellation of the original fixture. Luckily, the rain held off and the sun came out, to allow play to take place on our grass courts. Ryedale produced a strong first pair who romped away with the first set 6 – 2 against the Easingwold duo of Judith Simpson and Ali Smethurst; but by the turn-around, Judith and Ali were fighting back and took the second set 6 -4. Meanwhile, mother and daughter pair, Shirley Shepherd and Lisa Harrison, stormed away to an entertaining 2 set win against the second Ryedale pair. During the second rubber, light became a critical factor and the match had to be prematurely terminated, by mutual consent. At this stage, the sets were all even, but (as per the rules) Easingwold was able to claim victory, having won the greater number of games. This match drew to a conclusion another successful season for ladies’ tennis in Easingwold. Sixteen ‘stars’ of the grass courts have contributed to the fortunes of the team this year, namely, Wendy Appleby, Sally Craggs, Sarah Craggs, Jane Dunn, Linda Frances, Lisa Harrison, Mandy Parker, Louise Plant, Liz Potrykus, Rachael Potrykus, Jane Ridley, Shirley Shepherd, Ali Smethurst, Judith Simpson, Helen Sykes and Maureen Wilkinson. Appreciation to everyone for their support, plus the many others who pledged to play but, unfortunately, were denied by the weather. And - special gratitude to the young members of the squad (you know who you are) without whom, we couldn’t have met our league commitments. For the record, against strong opposition, we have won 6 matches out of 10 this season– a small indication of the strength of ladies’ tennis at the club. Long may it continue!
