EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

Last week we reported on the beginners/improvers group set up by the running club.  This week, at the other end of the spectrum, we are focussing on a founding member of Easingwold Running Club and also its eldest, Cliff Simm, who yet again, has passed another important milestone in his running career.  The Club’s Handicap race last Thursday was Cliff’s 100th race since his 75th birthday three years ago.  “The first century I have ever recorded in any sport” was Cliff’s response to his latest achievement.  In order to fulfil his centenary landmark, Cliff competed in races varying from 3 miles to half marathons all over the North of England and even sometimes abroad.  Ever competitive, last month he recorded a personal best time for the last two years of 57 mins at the Darlington 10K race finishing 733rd but still with 225 finishers behind him, all of course, much younger and some less than half his age.  He finds running to be much more enjoyable and satisfying to be an active participant rather than a passive spectator, especially in events organised by local communities in towns and villages.  Some of Cliff’s statistics that he has recorded in order to achieve his centenary make interesting reading.Miles in competition: 618Overall time: 96 hours (just 4 days precisely)Additional hours in preparation: 1750Cliff finds it rewarding to be greeted by name at races by other fellow runners he has got to know over the years and the camaraderie associated with the swapping of experiences after crossing the finish line.  Perhaps it is this companionship and the sociable nature of running that has enabled him to notch up such outstanding statistics.
