Easingwold School welcomes visiting teachers from Sri Lanka

Staff and students of Easingwold School have recently hosted a visit from two teachers from its partnership school in Sri Lanka, Richmond College, as part of the two schools’ mutual exchange programme.Mr Ekanayake, Principal of Richmond College, and Miss Sudarma, English tutor, made the long journey from Sri Lanka to North Yorkshire to gain insights into the English education system. During their week-long visit they observed lessons, attended meetings and worked with students to produce a display about Sri Lanka in the school’s entrance hall.Richmond College, an all-boys school based in the southern city of Galle, was home to former Sri Lankan Minister of Education Crestoper Kannangara in his youth. He is known as ‘The Father of Free Education’ in the country after changing the education system to enable all children to attend school. Over 4,500 boys, aged between six and eighteen, attend the school. The current President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, is also an old boy of the school. The international partnership between the schools began over three years ago, when students exchanged videos, photographs and written projects to broaden each other’s knowledge and understanding of their respective cultures. Two teachers from Easingwold School have already visited Sri Lanka. Plans are already being made for return visits next year, when it is hoped to involve both students and teachers.The schools are keen to strengthen the links between them. “As a Specialist Language College and International School, partnerships with schools in other countries are very important to us,” said Emma Robins, Acting Head Teacher. “They provide excellent opportunities to learn about other cultures and to share good practice.”
