Easingwold U13’s Cricket Team

After going all season in the South Zone of the league unbeaten, last Thursday Easingwold Under 13’s had to travel to Thirsk who had won the North Zone. The boys knew it would be a harder task playing Thirsk than most of the competition this season. On winning the toss skipper Josh Summerscales had no hesitation in batting first on what looked a good batting track. Josh Summerscales and Josh Sargent made a great start with 43 on the board before Summerscales was bowled for 16. That introduced the big hitting Tom Williams. He and Sargent added another 9 before Sargent was bowled for 17. Tom blasted his way to 19 off only 7 scoring shots before being bowled. That then introduced Jack Peel into the attacking battling role who scored 16 before being caught. Easingwold finished their innings on 95 for 5 off 20 overs. Easingwold then came out to field knowing only the best fielding and bowling was required to win this so Sargent opened the bowling and with his 1st ball removed one of the openers. Thirsk then started to pile on the runs getting their total up to 33 before Summerscales came on to bowl taking the wicket of the other opener for 23 runs. Summerscales then tied up the Thirsk middle order with his leg spin, taking 2 more wickets and slowing the run rate down. Charlie Wentworth then came onto bowl taking a wicket and forcing a run out. With wickets falling Easingwold could have let it slip but continued to put pressure on Thirsk at 52 for 7. Thirsk then rallied a little with a stance of 16 between Tom Spencer who retired on 31 not out and Callum Barr, Skipper Summerscales then introduced Jack Peel and Oliver Tanner-Smith into the bowling attack and Peel bowled Barr and had a catch taken by the impressive Summerscales. Not to be outdone Tanner-Smith got in on the act as well with another catch taken by guess who, yes you’ve guessed it “Summerscales”.The came the controversy, the man earlier retired is allowed to come back in but the umpires could not agree as to his role, this led to a slight delay in play as rules were read and telephone calls made but still to no avail, in the end coach Marcus Summerscales said it doesn’t matter and let him come back and strike the ball, with 82 on the board things had got a little tense, he faced one ball off Peel and got a single then the phone rang, the umpires converged on loud speaker, Rule 5.9 said he can come back in but only as a runner. So that was finalised, the run was knocked off the Thirsk total, now he was left to face Peel scoring 2 more runs before being bowled by Peel and that was that.Thirsk all out for 84, Easingwold Champions.
