EPCC Garden Party - weathers the storm

The Easingwold Parochial Church Council (EPCC) of St John The Baptist & All Saints Church celebrated its traditional Garden Party at the tranquil Lones Dailes, home of Church Councillor and local rock of the community Doreen Hayes. The manicured lawns and surroundings courtesy of local Gardener Andrew Nelson & Son were a picture postcard for the grand opening. Despite reports of a dreadful forecast this did not halt the local community supporting the prestigious event in aid of the parish church fund. With a jovial and pleasant atmosphere the ‘togetherness’ of the community was clearly visible. A vast selection of stalls to choose from the white elephant stall went to local solicitor Peter and wife Sally Coomer who believed the weather to be “the worst we’ve had in fifteen years”. Both further survived an eventful scrape of Bric-a- brac with the floor. Thankfully there was no real damage.   The ever popular Tombola spurred the many eagerly awaited wallets out. It was no surprise the fading generation of home-made cooking peaked supply and demand with appetizing home-baked biscuits, cakes and scones greatly sought-after. Having to shelter the book stall from the rain, Church PA Michael Wansborough added “They were at risk of becoming pulp fiction”. Providing much of the comedy he later added, a fellow passer by somewhat cute had once said “What’s the matter, don’t you like the rain?” Nevertheless rather fitting to the efforts of all on the day he said of the community, “They have shown true Yorkshire grit”. Along with Art & crafts, a pantry and inside plants stall, the chiefly British tea and coffee provided the social hub of conversation under the erected marquees. With rumour circulating of a guest appearance by The Archbishop of York - Dr John Sentamu, newly instated Chancellor of York St John University, he was apparently to fly in by Helicopter. This never materialised but of course it was agreed he was there in spirit.Vicar John Harris and devoted wife Ann were delighted with the numbers stating the party “Had gone quite well and its always nice at Doreen’s getting locals together chatting”. Guests included local Daphne Ellis as well as fellow Methodist and Catholic Church members. Parish Church Warden Ian Peel was instrumental with the smooth operation and layout of the event, very much responsible for all hands on deck at the finish when Met Office predictions sadly came true and the heavens opened. All in all a truly triumphant and worthwhile morning with a total sum of £716 raised. The festivities continue in December with the Church Bazaar. Finally the EPCC would like to say a special thank you to all Parishioners and the general public for bearing the weather and supporting the much needed church fund. Thank you and God
