Model Aircraft Competition at Tholthorpe

I.M.A.C.  U.K (International Miniature Aerobatics Club) is the competition flying, in several different classes, of scale radio controlled model aerobatic aircraft in sequences of aerobatic manoeuvres as flown by their full size counterparts in America. The aircraft must be scale but can be of any size and can use either electric or Internal combustion power. The above-mentioned classes vary in their degree of difficulty, newcomers starting at an easy level (Basic) and progressing by results attained on to the higher classes (Sportsman, Advanced and Unlimited). The fourth round of this year’s competitions took place at Tholthorpe Airfield over the weekend (28th 29th June). Competitors from all over the UK and Northern Ireland took part, with models varying in size from 2.1m wingspan with 50cc petrol to 3m wingspan with 150cc petrol, three of the Tholthorpe flying group also took part, Barry James from York, (Advanced class) & Andy Wood & his son Charlie from Tholthorpe (Sportsman Class). The weather turned out to be better than forecast with strong winds but very little rain, the strong wind made the flying even more challenging than usual but was completed without incident to any aircraft, along with the prizes for the 4 classes was an additional prize for the best overall available score, this was the Snowy Owl Squadron trophy, named after one of the RCAF Halifax squadrons based at Tholthorpe in WW11. This, and all the other prizes were presented to their recipients by Ben May, a former Snowy Owl Squadron Flight Engineer who flew from Tholthorpe in 1945, the overall trophy was won by 15 year old Ollie Staples (Advanced class) from Sheffield, of the Tholthorpe pilots Barry James took 2nd in advanced, Andy Wood 2nd in sportsman only just ahead of Charlie Wood in 3rd.All in all a most successful weekend thoroughly enjoyed by all those involved that will hopefully become an annual event.
