News from U3A

There is to be a new U3A group - Beginners French, starting on August 1st at 11 am.  New members would be very welcome. For further information contact Ingrid on 822805.On Thursday September 25th there will be a U3A visit to Kew at Castle Howard with a tour led by the arborist. Further information at our next meeting or contact Pete Davies.Our talk in July was on the History of the Theatre Royal given by Maria Bewers who has had a long association with the theatre in a wide variety of roles, both back stage and front of house. The York Theatre Royal was built in 1744 on, and among, the site of a medieval hospital, known as St. Leonard’s Hospital. Under the stage lies a well, which is believed to be dated from the Roman era of York’s history. Parts of the old hospital can still be seen in the modern building, including archways and walls. The 1744 theatre replaced a theatre in Minster Yard, built by Thomas Keregan, with the encouragement of the City Corporation, in 1734. Twenty-five years after its construction, in 1769, Tate Wilkinson paid £500 for a Royal Patent, and, accordingly, it was renamed the Theatre Royal. In addition to the history Maria’s illustrated talk gave us interesting information about the workings of the theatre.Our next open meeting will be on August 19th  - Conservation ICI by Ken Smith.The walking group is still flourishing see the photograph below of their walk in June in the Coulton area.
