Stepping into G H Smiths foot prints
European work experience at The Easingwold AdvertiserMy name is Sebastian Meyer and I am an 18-year-old student from Münster, Germany. Due to an exchange programme existing between Easingwold School and the Johann-Conrad-Schlaun Gymnasium in Münster I had the chance to take part in a two-week programme called European work experience, wherein participating students undergo work experience at local businesses and firms here in Easingwold. I took part in a former exchange to Easingwold about five years ago and was happy to be able to refresh my memories of this wonderful little place in North Yorkshire and moreover have the opportunity to gain some international work experience. The whole organization of the exchange was very last minute but a week before we left, the responsible teacher in Münster and the teacher from Easingwold School finally managed to find exchange partners for me and eight other students. Most of the German students knew where they were going to work during the their time in Easingwold but I didn’t until I arrived and my exchange partner told me that I would be working at G H Smith & Son (The Easingwold Advertiser). I was very happy that my exchange partner had found a workplace that matched my interests in media and design. At the first day at the Advertiser Office of G H Smith & Son, I was introduced to the staff and the kind of work they are dealing with. All the adverts and articles for the Advertiser come in all over the week and are put together by the design department, mainly on Wednesday. The Easingwold Advertiser is then printed, folded, stapled and delivered by the printing department on Thursday. The same process applies to The Thirsk Weekly News but its layout is finished on Tuesday and it is printed and delivered on Wednesday. Besides The Easingwold Advertiser and its sister title The Thirsk Weekly News, G H Smith & Son also designs and prints books, magazines and various brochures.During the first week of my practical experience I got to see how this sixth generation family company in its third century of business with a relatively small amount of staff members turns plain sheets of paper into a bright and colorful newspaper full of advertisements. So far it has been a really interesting experience to see how many stages the paper has to go through before you can read its articles. Full Article Archived News View All...
