Stillington Flower Festival and Scarecrows
The theme of the Flower Festival, held at St Nicholas Church, was Christian Mission to the World. Desmond and Penny Redding carried out the research and arranged the display of information from St Paul’s travels to Macedonia and Greece to David Livingston’s 19th century missionary work in Africa. The team of flower arrangers created their own magnificent interpretations of seven different parts of the world which, over the years, have been introduced to Christianity. Outside the church, Gillian Sanderson depicted the British Isles with the display including a sailing ship: inside the church, Penny Redding’s stand was Greece; Ruth Little - India; Margaret Jackson - China; Joanna Sanderson - America; Liz Anne Cumberlege - The Cook Islands and Eileen Lomas - Africa. The church window displays, by Mavis North, Hilda Nash and Anne Cobb, depicted the colours of each country being displayed. The theme for the scarecrows took on the role of Around the World in 80 Scarecrows. The figures depicted either people or creatures relating to countries around the world or the different versions and needs for travelling. Some 69 wonderful fun creations appeared around the village for the weekend and it was good to see the smiles and well being they sparked – they also helped considerably to slow the traffic down through the village. The competition to identify the figures was won by Jan and John Simpson; Chamberlain family 2nd and Tomlinson family 3rd.Tim Adams was sports master for the races on the Village Green on Sunday afternoon; with the races getting faster as the rain got faster!Spilman’s Sessay Strawberries started the weekend’s refreshments and meringues, cream teas, sandwiches, scones, biscuits, drinks and the energetic team of helpers kept everyone going right through to Sunday evening.
