Stillington Squash Players at Grantham’s 2013 Open Squash Doubles Tournament

Eight intrepid souls from Stillington Squash Club entered this year’s Grantham Squash Doubles tournament, Nottingham on Saturday 2nd February. Blending youth and experience (but mainly experience), skill and skulduggery, the four pairs had high hopes. The wily couple of Duncan Cook and Mark Brogan looked promising on paper, but didn’t quite deliver on court, their shots often bamboozling themselves as well as their opponents – they exited after the round robin group stage. Jon Walker and Nick Peel were hoping to improve on their performance of a couple of years ago, but didn’t start well and lost their first game. However, they got their act together and scraped through as group winners due to a freak set of results. Taking full advantage, they powered their way to the final of their section, before finally succumbing to a skilful pair from Nottingham. The fancied pairs (by themselves anyway) of Jon Wright and Thomas Howell, and Tim Steel and Anthony Baines, both made steady progress to the semi-finals of their section. Due to meet in the semi-finals, Tim Steel took the controversial decision of successfully persuading the tournament referee to change the draw to keep the teams apart in the hope of an all-Stillington final. It backfired for Tim and Anthony, though, as they lost. Jon and Thomas weren’t so wasteful – they ensured Stillington was represented in a second final on the day, although once again they fell at the final hurdle, almost bullied off the court by a bruising pair of giants.Still, all agreed it had been an enjoyable and successful day.
