On Sunday 6th July, Easingwold residents gathered on the Raskelf Road bridge to witness a once-in-a-generation spectacle as a 200-tonne electricity transformer slowly made its way southbound along the A19.
The enormous load, travelling on an 80-metre (262ft) specialist vehicle, drew a crowd of curious onlookers, families, and photographers keen to capture the rare event.
The convoy, escorted by police, left Teesport in Middlesbrough at 6am. It had already caused significant traffic disruption across Teesside by the time it approached the outskirts of Easingwold.
Locals began lining the bridge as the transformer approached. Traffic along the A19 came to a standstill in both directions — a striking scene for a quiet Sunday.
It’s not every day you see something the size of 30 elephants rolling down the A19. Children peered over the edge of the bridge to catch a glimpse of the bright red transport structure.
Despite the long wait and temporary road closures, the atmosphere remained upbeat. It was a unique experience, and several motorists, although delayed, stepped out of their vehicles to join spectators and snap photos.
