One of North Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets provided the perfect backdrop for a recent field trip by the Easingwold District u3a Wild Flower Group.
For the first time, the group explored the little-visited Lake Gormire—one of the few natural lakes in Hambleton and indeed, the county.
Tucked quietly beneath the dramatic cliffs of Sutton Bank, Lake Gormire was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, but today, it rests isolated and undisturbed, cradled by ancient woodland, and boasts an ecologically rich habitat—an ideal setting for wildflower enthusiasts.
The group walked the entire circumference of the lake, carefully noting the flora near the path and along the water’s edge where access allowed.
Despite the unusually warm spring which had caused some species to flower early, the group identified an impressive list of plants.
Among the highlights seen were Enchanter’s Nightshade, Hedge Woundwort, Gypsywort, Perforate St. John’s Wort, Herb Bennet, Water Mint, Water Forget-me-not, Lesser Spearwort, Feverfew, Marsh Bedstraw, Whorled Mint, a strange mottled leaved clump of Wood Sage and the cheerful Yellow Pimpernel as well as many others.
