Our Easingwold u3a Discovering Geology group continues to have interesting outings where we can look at a variety of rock types and sometimes find out how they are used as building stones.
Recently we had a very interesting geological tour of York centre, identifying the surprising number of different rocks used for both buildings construction and especially for decoration.
We found that many of the older buildings including the Roman Wall and York Minster were built from local (OK, Tadcaster!) Magnesium Limestone - it is nice and pale in colour and robust - and thus ideal for constructing large buildings.
