During every bowls season the Ryedale Vets Bowls League promote an inter-club competition called ‘The Fred Dews Triples’.
The competition is one of the pinnacles of the season and many of the clubs in the Ryedale and surrounding areas of North Yorkshire participate, some clubs enter multiple teams in an attempt to win this prestigious trophy.
The final is held at a neutral venue over 18 ends.
The Easingwold triples team of Keith Hughes (lead wood), David Brown (2nd wood) and Les Fussey (skip) were attempting to win the trophy for a remarkable 5th year.
In the first round, the holders were drawn away to a Pickering trio, two of whom had won a Vets pairs championship in 2024.
Easingwold took an early lead. However, after 10 ends the score was 7-7.
After 13 ends Pickering had forged ahead to lead 11-8.
The pressure was on for the Easingwold trio. But they responded well by only dropping one shot over the last five ends for the match to finish 15-12 in their favour.
In the quarter final the champions were drawn against another Easingwold trio led by Debbie Taylor. Debbie’s team did not play to their normal high standard and were beaten 24 shots to 5.
In the semi-final, the Easingwold trio were drawn away against the formidable Kirkbymoorside trio who they had beaten by two shots in last year’s final.
With the KMS team drawn at home it was felt that they were slight favourites.
Easingwold started slowly and lost the first three ends but they recovered to take the next three ends and at the halfway stage led 8-4.
The away trio kept that form in the second half and the game finished 16-10 in their favour.
