Easingwold’s Friday Market Hits 50!

Even the threatened rain didn’t dare to darken Easingwold marketplace’s big day on Friday 6th June.

The Town Mayor, Peter Nottage and Town Council Clerks, Jane Bentley and Jean Fairbrother, welcomed patrons from far and wide to the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Easingwold’s Friday market.

Odd, you may say, that it’s not been around longer than that. The market lapsed earlier in the 20th century, only to be revived in its current form in June 1975.

It first took place on the cobbles around the Buttercross. It later moved to the main car park as the number of stalls and customer demand grew. Its popularity and demand has been growing ever since.

To mark their 50 years holding markets in the town, the Council invited our MP, Sir Alec Shelbrooke to lead the celebrations.

He praised the market and spoke of its constant impact on, and importance to the town.

He also presented gifts of flowers and bubbly to two wonderful market stalwarts: Maureen Hebdon and Jane Fish, have been trading on the market all those 50 years.
